Children's eye care
Children often do not notice, or cannot tell us, when they do not see clearly. A regular eye exam checks your child's vision and the health of their eyes.
At a glance
- Who it is for
- Children and teens
- OHIP coverage
- 1 major eye exam every 12 months for ages 19 and under, plus any minor assessments needed
- Before they can read
- Children do not need to know their letters to have an eye exam.
- What to bring
- Your child's health card and any glasses they wear
What we check
- How clearly your child sees far away and up close
- Whether glasses would help
- How well the eyes focus and work together, which matters for reading and school
- The health of the eyes
Signs to watch for
- Squinting, or tilting the head to see
- Sitting very close to the TV or holding books close to the face
- Rubbing the eyes often
- Covering one eye
- Headaches or tired eyes after reading or screen time
- Losing their place while reading
If you notice any of these, book an eye exam. You do not need to wait for a problem: your optometrist will recommend how often your child should have an eye exam.
What to expect
Step 1: Book for your child
When you book online, choose that the appointment is for your child and use your own phone number and email as the parent or guardian.
Step 2: The exam
Your optometrist chooses tests that suit your child's age.
Step 3: Eye drops
Some children need eye drops that widen the pupils. Afterwards their vision may be blurry and bright light may bother them for a few hours.
Step 4: Results
We explain the results and any next steps, and tell you when to come back.
