About contact lens fittings

A contact lens prescription is different from a glasses prescription. It includes measurements of your eyes and the type of lens that fits them, which is why a fitting is part of getting contact lenses.

At your fitting

  • We talk about how and when you plan to wear contact lenses
  • We measure the surface of your eyes and check how trial lenses fit
  • If you are new to contact lenses, we show you how to put them in, take them out and keep them clean
  • We check how your eyes are doing with the lenses, which may need a follow-up visit

What to expect

  1. Step 1: Your eyes and your routine

We ask how you plan to use contact lenses and check the health of the front of your eyes.

  2. Step 2: Trial lenses

We check how trial lenses fit and how clearly you see with them.

  3. Step 3: Your prescription

When the fit is right, your optometrist gives you a contact lens prescription.

  4. Step 4: Follow-up

Your optometrist tells you when to come back to check your lenses and your eyes.

Questions about contact lenses

Do I need a contact lens fitting if I have a glasses prescription?

Yes. A glasses prescription does not include the measurements needed for contact lenses. A contact lens fitting checks how lenses fit your eyes and gives you a contact lens prescription.

I have never worn contact lenses. Where do I start?

Book a contact lens fitting. Your optometrist will check whether contact lenses suit your eyes and talk with you about the kinds of lenses that fit your needs and your routine.
